I'd rather be naive

Things lose there magic as wisdom grows
betrayal doesn't hurt
until we know
But I remember
when the grass really was a little greener
when a strangers smile seemed sincere
now we walk in haste and fear
making our best friend "swear on a grave"
and still doubting
the words that they say
Believing we are one step
ahead of the rest
but you'd best believe
I'd rather be naive

If someone reaches out a hand,
we wonder why
so afraid of "giving" more than we "take"
we've learned to call "caring"
an honest mistake
god forbid someone should leave an unpaid debt
of all the things swept under the rug
it's our skeletons
we try most to forget

Now you can take misery
and call it "smarts"
when our hearts breed suspicion,
a condition that may never leave
but me.....I'd rather be naive.
